Prepositions of Place: AT, ON, IN

5 min

Three prepositions decide almost every place question in one-day exams.

1

The one rule that solves all three

Think of size. AT is a point, ON is a line or surface, IN is a closed space. Move from smallest to largest and the correct word appears on its own.

2

Exam Value

  • Choose AT for a location treated as a point: at the station.
  • Use ON for contact with a surface; use IN for being inside an enclosed space.
  • Read the whole sentence: at the school describes a location, while in the school emphasises being inside.

Quick Memory

  • AT = point · ON = surface · IN = inside
  • at the bus stop · on the table · in the room
  • in the corner of a room · at the corner of a street
