Mean, Median and Mode

5 min

Master central tendency with fast calculation rules and direct exam traps

1

Golden Rule

Central tendency measures the center of data. Mean is average, median is middle value after sorting, and mode is the most frequent observation. Range is simply the difference between maximum and minimum values.

2

Why It Matters

  • At least 1 to 2 direct questions appear in every SSC, Railway, and Defence exam.
  • Crucial for data interpretation and fast numerical calculation without heavy algebra.
  • Direct empirical formula connects mean, median, and mode for rapid answering.

Memory Hooks

  • Mode = 3 Median - 2 Mean (The ultimate empirical formula for symmetric and skewed data).
  • Median needs sorting first! Never calculate median on raw unsorted data.
  • Range = Max - Min (The simplest spread metric in statistics).

Concept Breakdown

Mean

(Arithmetic Average)

Mean: Arithmetic Average

Arithmetic Average

Mean of 2, 4, 6 is (2+4+6)/3 = 4.

Median

(Exact Middle Value)

Median: Exact Middle Value

Exact Middle Value

In 3, 1, 7 sorted as 1, 3, 7 median is 3.

Mode

(Highest Frequency)

Mode: Highest Frequency

Highest Frequency

In 2, 3, 3, 5 mode is 3.

Range

(Span of Values)

Range: Span of Values

Span of Values

For 4, 9, 2 range is 9 - 2 = 7.

Exam Traps & Pitfalls

Finding median without sorting dataAlways sort ascending/descending first

Unsorted raw data will yield completely wrong middle positions.

Assuming every dataset has only one modeA dataset can be bimodal or multimodal

If two numbers repeat with same maximum frequency, both are modes.

Confusing range with meanRange is Max minus Min, not sum divided by count

Range measures spread, whereas mean measures central location.

Quick Practice Quiz

Q1.Find the median of the data: 12, 7, 15, 10, 4, 19, 8.

Q2.If the mean of a distribution is 20 and the median is 22, find the mode using the empirical relation.
