  • BNSS, 2023 replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 from 1 July 2024.
  • Contains 531 sections; emphasises time limits, videography and e-records.
  • Zero FIR, e-FIR and mandatory forensic visit for offences punishable with 7 years or more.

Timelines to remember

  • Charge sheet must normally be filed within 90/60 days as per offence gravity.
  • Judgment to be pronounced within 45 days of completion of trial.
  • Charges to be framed within 60 days of first hearing.
  • Arrested person's information must be given to a nominated person and displayed at the police station.
